Motor Vehicle Check-up – Oil Change

Lubrication plays a vital part in the operation of an automobile.  Without lubrication the engine would overheat, and its working parts would seize, the engine would fail to function as it would not be able to overcome friction.

The lubrication system, like other parts of the automobile requires proper attention and service, and should therefore be carefully maintained. For best results the following should be observed:

  1. Motor oil should be changed at 3,000 miles/5000 km intervals or 3 month whichever comes first.  If the vehicle is operated on very dusty roads, oil should be changed more frequently.
  2. Oil filter should be changed every time the oil is changed.  It should be noted that it is normal for an engine to consume some oil. Oil consumption increases at high driving speed.  Moderate driving should be practiced to lessen consumption.

When driving long distance, you should always check the oil levels at intervals. If oil is checked over a period and the level remains constant, never be disillusioned into believing that the engine is not consuming oil.  The level remains constant because of sludge and water created by combustion. Contaminated oil becomes thin and poses a danger to engine life; therefore, oil should be changed as recommended.  Constant oil level does not mean the oil should not be changed.

3.  Never add oil to your engine when it is of a different grade from that recommended for use in the particular vehicle; e.g. if a SAE 5W30 oil is being used and it is found out after checking that   the oil needs topping off, the same SAE 5W30 should be used .

Tapping off should only be done between changes and at no time be used to replace an oil change. Care should be taken when adding oil additives as most additives creates more problems than benefits. My husband, who is an automobile technician by profession, stated that if an oil additive is used, highly recommends the use of Marvel Mystery Oil. This lubricant is proved to be safe and offers excellent results.

Lubricate all doors and hood hinges. Never forget to have an oil service sticker placed inside the vehicle as your reminder to the next oil change service.

You should also check your braking system at each oil change intervals. Remember, regular oil changes will undoubtedly double the life of your engine.

Happy Motoring and long live your engine!

  1. Interesting info regarding oil level, sludge & water. I never considered that. I check my oil every time I fill up. it’s a good habit and a perfect time to do it.

  2. Hi Beverlie
Wow you seem to know a lot about this stuff-very impressive!
Me, I just open the bonnet (hood) when something is up-this is usually associated with a loud knocking noise……
Keep up the good work from a Masterclass student of 2009.
    Best wishes
    Mike

  3. Hi Mike:
Thanks for your comments. My knowledge of auto repairs comes from my husband who had spend over 40 years as a auto technician. L keep encouraging him to do something with the knowledge he has, as people are in need of his knowledge. In the meantime, I will continue to post information on automobile.

  4. Hi Alan:

I am glad that my post was able to educate you on the proper way to maintain your motor vehicle. My husband has been in the field of automobile technician since he was a boy, and of course he has passed on a little of the knowledge to me. Thanks for your comments.

  5. Hi Beverlie,
I’m a new student in John Thornhill’s Masterclass 2010. i’ve never done anything like blogging, let alone internet marketing. Jet with Johns video lessons I’ve come a long way towards my goal. Like you I’m so glad I found him. Hmm…I think I’ve heard that somewhere, think it was a song. Oh well, I’ve been looking at other students blogs. Just wanted to tell you you’ve got a great blog going, you must have spent a lot of time on it, now I know how time consuming this is. But I am enjoying the whole thing. Like you said if we stick to our goal we can accomplish anything. Your post on the importance of oil change is so appropriate for all of us. My father who is an engineer and a very practical man says the same as your husband. The best thing one can do for a car is to keep up with the oil changes. But you are lucky to have a husband who is not only so knowledgeable, but he can also double as your mechanic.

Have a Great day and good luck,
    EvaO’Neill

  6. Hello Eva:

Welcome to John’s Master Class. I have been a student since late October 09, and it is very interesting. At the moment I am trying to write my Sales Page. The task is daunting at times, but guess what, you have to do what you have to do. I am looking forward to accomplishing my goal, so I refuse to let discouragement cloud my view. Thanks for the lovely comments you made on my blog. Yes I am very blessed, I have no knowledge as to the cost of car repairs, because my husband had that completely covered. Any mechanical posting made, it is always done with his help and guidance. So Welcome again to JMC

Trust we will continue communication. If by any means I can assist you, please feel free to ask.

  9. Hi Beverlie,
I just took my car in for a service at the dealership and got charged an arm and a leg for it. I really miss my dad as he always used to service my car for me, but although I know a lot about cars because of helping him, I find that todays cars are all computerised and I dare not touch much under the bonnet (hood)!
Any way I am glad I have more understanding of internet marketing since being on John’s course, and I can see that you are progressing well as your blog is looking great. Stay motivated as it will all be worth it in the end.
    Kind regards,
    Sue.
